How do I transfer files between my phone and laptop?
Open Volo on both devices, create a room on one, and scan the QR code or open the link on the other. Once connected, drag in a file and it streams from one browser to the other.
What's the maximum file size I can send?
It depends on the receiving browser. When the receiver uses desktop Chrome or Edge, the file is saved straight to disk and Volo sets no fixed size limit; the practical limit is free disk space, the browser, and how stable the connection is. Other browsers, including Safari on iPhone and Firefox, hold the file in memory and are capped at 1GB. Volo is designed for very large files, in the tens of gigabytes.
Do my files get uploaded to a server or the cloud?
No. Files aren't uploaded or stored; file data flows directly between the two browsers over WebRTC. A public signaling server (PeerJS) introduces the devices and sees the room code and connection details such as IP addresses, but never file contents.
Is the transfer private and secure?
Transfers are encrypted in transit with DTLS, WebRTC's built-in transport encryption, and no copy is kept on a server. Volo doesn't add a separate end-to-end encryption layer, and the room link is the only key to a room, so share it only with the person you're sending to.
Does Volo work between iPhone and Windows, or Android and Mac?
Yes. Volo runs in modern WebRTC-capable browsers on iPhone, Android, Windows, Mac, and Linux, in any combination. Size limits depend on the receiving browser.
Does it work if the devices are on different networks?
Often, yes. Same Wi-Fi is the most reliable. Across networks Volo uses STUN to find a direct route, but it has no relay server, so some networks, such as strict corporate or some mobile networks, can't connect.
Do I need to install an app or create an account?
No. Volo is a web app, so there's nothing to install and no sign-up. Just open the site and start sharing.
Do both devices need to be online at the same time?
Yes. Volo is a live connection between two browsers, so both need to stay open and online for the whole transfer. There's no server holding the file for later pickup.
What happens if the connection drops mid-transfer?
The transfer stops and needs to be sent again; there's no resume yet. Keep both devices awake and the tabs open. On iPhone, locking the screen or switching apps can interrupt it.
Is it really free, and how — what's the catch?
It's free, with no ads and no account. Because files move browser to browser, Volo doesn't pay for file storage or bandwidth, so there's no paid tier waiting behind a limit.
